Lech was once a traditional farming village before Arlberg became one of the first places to welcome downhill ski enthusiasts in the early 20th century. Pride in its snowsports heritage is strong across the Arlberg and the Tannberg region, but particularly in Lech, which has produced several world and Olympic snow sports legends. Sitting at 1444m, many doubt the quality of the snow. But Lech has its own microclimate, meaning it often has some of the best snow records in Europe.

Like most of Austria, strict building regulations have maintained a lot of original architecture. But Lech goes one step further. The village sits high on the Flexen path and, until road construction in the late 19th century, existed separately to the rest of the world. Lech is compact, making the lifts and town centre very accessible. Stunning streets make walking around here a delight. Regular buses transport you to Lech, Oberlech, Zug and Zurs, and the James bus will take you to and from the village until 3 am.

Travelling by car
The roads north of Lech are closed in the winter so you’ll need to access it from the south. The roads can be challenging as you approach the higher altitudes. Law states that you must drive with winter tyres and use snow chains for some of the resort roads. If your luxury chalet in Lech doesn’t have parking, there are three different garages where you can park overnight.

Travelling by train
The closest train stations to Lech are Langen and St. Anton. From here it is around a 25-minute drive into the village.

There’s so much choice that you could enjoy a different fine dining experience every night of the week. Cosy up in a traditional chalet in town or dine among the panoramic views of the Arlberg.

In the town

Hus Nr. 8 expertly combines gourmet dining with traditional cuisine. Settle into the 1760s barn and feast on regional plates like hot stone fondue, Walser cheese soup, schnitzel, and roasted duck. For more fine dining in a historic setting, check out the 1780s schoolhouse at Rote Wand Chef’s Table. Get a live show as top chef Julian Stieger crafts beautiful dishes from fresh regional products.

Fux is an Asian fusion restaurant with an impressive Gault Millau score. It also has one of Austria’s largest wine collections, so you won’t struggle to find the perfect pairing for your food. Griggeler Stuba has received 4 toques from Gault Millau. The sophisticated restaurant uses seasonal ingredients, with a particular focus on wild herbs. Aurelio also boasts a high Gault Millau score and you can enjoy their curated selection of international plates on the beautiful sun terrace.

On the slopes

Snuggle up in a rustic ski hut at Rud Alp. Wooden dining rooms and fabulous mountain views create the perfect setting to tuck into classic Austrian delicacies. Goldener Berg has 17 points from Gault Millau. They have a strong focus on regional produce and you can even visit in the evenings thanks to the cable car running until 1 am.

Fancy a break from alpine plates? The stylish Balmalp is the perfect stop on the White Ring Circuit. Its stunning views at the top of the Zug lift accompany a beautiful selection of salads and the famous Balmalp giant pizza. You could also try Don Enzo, the only run-side Italian restaurant in Lech. Schlegekopf offers regional plates from Lech’s sister towns in Japan, the USA, and Germany. Whether you’re craving steak or sushi, the menu here has something to please everybody.

Lech Apres & Nightlife

It may not compare to the craziness of its neighbour St. Anton, but there’s plenty in Lech to keep a night owl busy. Start on the terrace bars in Oberlech before seeking out some late-night revelry. If your Lech ski chalet isn’t in the centre, a regular bus service runs until 3 am.

Refresh with a cool drink in the sun by the piste, or ski over to Oberlech and wrap up the day at an umbrella bar.

  • For a unique apres-ski experience, ride the Moët & Chandon Champagne gondola. Graze delicious appetizers and sip bubbles as you glide across the mountain.
  • Rud Alpe is a 250-year-old ski hut with glorious views across the valley.  It’s piste-side but pedestrians can reach it via a 20-minute flood-lit hiking trail. Head there Wednesday afternoon or Tuesday and Thursday nights for live music and hearty food.
  • The Burg Hotel in Oberlech is a popular spot for apres ski with its very own ice bar.

After your final descent, drop your skis at the door and linger for a post-ski catch-up. You might end up staying much longer than planned.

  • The flashy ice bar at Hotel Krone has been going for decades. It’s the classiest way to end your day on the slopes.
  • The cosy Skihütte Schneggarei is popular for its drinking games and plays house music until 1 am.

Not ready for the night to end? There are plenty of places open past midnight if you want to party hard.

  • Hotel Tannbergerhoff has a great terrace for mulled wine in the sunshine during the afternoons. Once the sun sets their Irish pub blasts the music until 3 am.
  • K-Club has great cocktails and a resident DJ that’ll keep you dancing through the night.
  • Vernissage Bar has been a Lech institution since the 90s and recently got a stylish update.

Ski Zone

Fluffy snow, sunny pistes, and glorious views make Lech one of the most iconic places to ski. In fact, skiing in Lech is so exclusive, they set a limit on daily lift ticket sales so the slopes remain peaceful and uncrowded. Top-tier lift infrastructure will whisk you across the Ski Arlberg area in record time and ultimate comfort. Once on the mountain, you can cruise through dense forests, alongside the cog railway, and exquisite powder runs.

The ski area

The Ski Arlberg area continues to grow every year. Currently, it’s comparable with the Espace Killy area in France. It’s now possible to also reach St. Anton and Zurs without taking a bus. With the Ski Arlberg pass you’ll have access to lifts in five different resorts and over 300km of slopes. Around Lech, there are three main districts to ski:

  • The area above Lech is an intermediate’s dream, with lots of reds and blues and plenty of off-piste for the more confident skier.
  • Oberlech is great for beginners, with a fun network of blue runs to get your legs warmed up.
  • Warth-Schroken has lots of variety, from cruisy blues to hair-raising blacks.

Boarders

Pistes in Lech are groomed to perfection, making it a great spot for snowboarders. Beginners will find plenty of terrain to practice on near the village, and most progress to a high level by the end of the week. Freeriders will love the powder around Zuger Hochlicht, while the fun park by Schlegelkopf provides lots of opportunities to show off your moves.

Beginners

Lech’s ski area has excellent nursery slopes, so beginners will have no problem mastering the basics over the week. Head to Oberlech for excellent beginner slopes and a kinderclub to get your little ones on the slopes. This is the main meeting spot for the ski schools. If you want to go out on your own, you can take the drag lifts in the bottom part of Lech. Ready to move onto blue runs? You’ll find a wonderful choice of long runs just above Oberlech. The Weibermahd blue is a particular favourite for newer skiers.

  • New Generation are an international ski school based across the Alps. They offer private ski and snowboard lessons as well as off-piste guiding.
  • Alpin Center Lech offer personalised courses for all ages and abilities.

Intermediates

Intermediate skiers will have no trouble in Lech, with lots of long easy reds and blues to nail your turns. Try the 5km long Madlong-Zurs red to really get your legs burning.

Looking for all-day sunshine? Follow the famous White Ring Route. It runs clockwise and celebrates the first lifts that joined the areas together in the 1940s. You’ll get to see the best of the Ski Arlberg area while racing across the sunniest pistes for the time of day.

If you’re looking for even quieter slopes, the Warth area is now linked to Lech via a new 2km long gondola. It’s a long route home so remains uncrowded most of the time. Just make sure you leave enough time to get home as the road link is closed in the winter.

Advanced

You’ll find a limited selection of black runs close to Lech, but you could always head over to Warth or St. Anton for more of a challenge. The real draw of Lech for advanced skiers is its fabulous powder and off-piste opportunities. The Schwarzewand descent offers outstanding views over the village. Or take the famous backcountry route running from St. Anton all the way back to Lech. Warth and Zurs also provide endless options for adventure off the piste.

The Arlberg region is the only place in Austria where you can heli-ski, offering the opportunity to see some of the most majestic landscapes of your life. Intermediates can have a wonderful introduction to heli-skiing at the Schneetäli-Orgelscharte drop zone, while more experienced skiers will find plenty of challenges on the Mehlsack mountain.

Weather

Despite sitting at only 1444m, Lech sits in a micro-climate, so it often has the best snow records in Austria, as well as the whole of the Alps. There is normally enough snow to ski by mid-December and the season runs long into April.

Things To Do

Things To Do In Lech

If you’re the only non-skier in your group, you’re in luck. Many visitors come here just to enjoy the alpine ambience, so you’ll find a buzz in the village throughout the day. Spend your days exploring the colourful streets then curl up with a coffee and cake at Baristo. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Lech, you can check out the Huber-Haus Museum. Then embrace the winter wonderland atmosphere with a horse and sleigh ride through the village or the snow-dusted forest.

Lech has a charming selection of shops, including high-end boutiques and major sports brands like The North Face. Create your new signature scent at the perfumery or pick up local cheese and wine from Hagen’s Village Butcher Shop.

More active travellers will find plenty to keep them busy. Glide across the open-air ice rink or try the fitness classes, gym, tennis, climbing wall, and 10-pin bowling available at the sports centre. There’s also snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, and over 40km of hiking trails to enjoy. Twice a week, there are guided hikes where you can spot native wildlife. For a pure adrenaline rush, why not try paragliding? It’ll offer you unparalleled views of this stunning region.

If you want to get out and about for the day, Lech is also a great base for a day trip. Get lost in the medieval architecture in Innsbruck or explore the Schattenburg castle in Feldkirch.
