Grindelwald has wonderful, cobbled streets, with many parts pedestrianised. Most chalets are based in the village centre. There are 2 train stations and a public bus service, making it easy to access the lifts and different parts of the village.
Travelling by car
There are a few small parking areas in the village or a larger one at the Grindelwald terminal. Frequent trains and buses link between the terminal and the village. You are unlikely to need your car once in the resort, so you may find it easier to park at Interlaken Ost and continue the journey by train.
Travelling by train
Train is the preferred method of getting to Grindelwald, as there is limited car parking in the resort. The Swiss rail network is convenient and efficient, and the journey across the Interlaken area is a stunning way to start your mountain adventure.

On the slopes
Film lovers and novelty seekers will want to check out Piz Gloria. It is a revolving solar powered restaurant that featured in the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’. Eat snacks and regional dishes while admiring 360 views of the surrounding peaks. For great views but a more idyllic setting, dine at Gasthaus Waldspitz. They serve up traditional mountain meals in the homely dining room or out on the sunny terrace.
Grindelwald has the most active nightlife in the Jungfrau region, with plenty of on mountain fun, classy bars in town and a good selection of live music. While it does not have the renowned nightlife of resorts like Zermatt and Verbier, the mood is happy and easy going. There is plenty of fun to be had for those looking to let off some steam.
Après ski typically starts on the mountain around 3pm. Warm up with plenty of hot, alcoholic options before your descent into town.
Many people will stay in their ski wear and start the party as soon as they arrive back in the village.
If you don’t want to call it a night, The Mescalero at Hotel Spinne hosts theme nights, live bands and is open until 3am.
The slopes of Grindelwald are real crowd pleasers. Hailed for its diversity, it is a fantastic resort for mixed ability groups and families. Exploring this region is an idyllic experience, with long slopes running alongside the cog railway and forests. There is over 200km of piste to keep a keen skier entertained. But if you want a change of scene, Wengen and Mürren have plenty more slopes to explore, are easy to access and connect to a variety of smaller ski areas.
The ski area
Recent investment in the lifts makes travelling between ski areas quick and efficient. There are two main ski areas to explore, as well as the further areas of Wengen and Mürren.
Boarders
Adventurous experts may get bored here, but there is plenty to do for the intermediate seeking a relaxing break. This is not a suitable resort for newer boarders, who may struggle with meandering paths and flatter areas. Carvers will love it here, with plenty of wide piste to master. For freeriding, head to Schreckfeld, where there is a selection of steep off piste to attempt. Bärgelegg-Snowpark has its own lift and 650m of freestyle fun.
Beginners
Ski schools are easy to access from the village, so is convenient for larger families. Bodmi is a large, sunny beginner’s area with an on-site bus stop. The kid’s village, magic carpet and slalom can all be enjoyed without buying a lift pass to the ski region. It is good for beginners of all ages and there is a restaurant where you can meet the rest of your group for lunch.
When ready to progress, go to the Oberjoch where you can make the most of easy slopes at high altitude. There is a 30 limit slope here so you won’t be intimidated or distracted by the skiers with a need for speed.

Intermediates
Long blues and easy reds are the backbone of this resort. It is perfect for intermediates looking to increase their confidence and master their technique. The 5-mile run from Oberjoch all the way back into resort is the perfect excuse for a lengthy, easy cruise. Go to the top of the Lauberhorn if you are looking for something a little more challenging. Grindelwald may be the perfect excuse to try open powder fields for the first time, with easy options available at the Eiger glacier.
Advanced
There isn’t an extensive selection of runs for the expert skier, but the incredible off piste itineraries more than make up for this. Black rock is a good choice for those attempting a black run for the first time. While some parts are steep and moguled, it flattens out in between, offering some respite. See how you measure up against the greats by attempting the black at Lauberhorn, location of the World Cup downhill race. For exceptional off piste and glacier skiing, go to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station. If you wish to explore more of the Jungfrau region, invest in some heliskiing for a truly unforgettable trip.

There are plenty of winter activities in Grindelwald to keep a non-skier entertained. Adrenaline seekers will enjoy Europe’s longest sledging trail and the zipline from Schreckfeld to First. Why not try out a velegemel? It’s a cross between a bike and a sledge. You also have the chance to try out ice skating and curling on a natural ice rink.
The stunning scenery surrounding Grindelwald is for everyone, which is why you can explore the mountains with a separate lift pass for non-skiers. Travel up the Eiger on the cog railway or take a cable car to meet your group for lunch among stunning views. Or take the bus to Lauterbrunnen and admire the Staubbach Falls. There are also many walking trails for you to tackle while taking in beautiful surroundings.
